Learning to Receive Help: A Lesson in Humility

For most of my life, I was the helper. The eldest of five children. The one friends called in crisis. The manager who stayed late when others went home.

Then I had a stroke at 61.

Suddenly I could not drive. I could not climb stairs easily. I needed people to do things I had always done myself. It was, I will not pretend otherwise, humiliating.

But something unexpected happened. As I slowly accepted help — from my children, from neighbours, from strangers who held doors — I began to see that receiving gracefully is itself a gift to the giver.

My daughter told me much later that those months were among her most meaningful, because she finally felt she was able to give back to me. My refusal, had I maintained it, would have robbed her of that.

The lesson: independence is valuable. But so is interdependence. Allowing others to help you is not weakness — it is one of the ways we stay in relationship with each other. Accept help with as much grace as you give it.
